UNESCO World Heritage site, and home to the Sri Maha Bodhi tree — grown from a sapling of the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment.

Sri Lanka's first ancient capital, founded in the 4th century BCE and the seat of Sinhalese kings for over a thousand years. The site spreads across a large area of forest, lakes, and ruins, including several of the largest brick stupas ever built.
