UNESCO World Heritage site — more compact and better preserved than Anuradhapura, which makes it easier to cover in a single day.

The ruins of Sri Lanka's medieval capital, in use from the 11th to 13th centuries after the abandonment of Anuradhapura. The site spreads across several square kilometres of royal palaces, stupas, Hindu temples, and rock-carved Buddha statues, including the four figures at Gal Vihara.
