Guided treks from Kudawa or Pitadeniya entry gates put you under closed canopy with mixed-species bird flocks — the rainforest experience the rest of the wet zone has lost.
Sri Lanka's largest stretch of undisturbed lowland rainforest, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978. The reserve covers about 88 km² between the Gin and Kalu river basins, with high endemism — over 60% of the trees and most of the bird species are found nowhere else.
